What Are Compressed Air Systems Used for and How to Optimize Them

Compressed air systems are often associated with industrial plants. It can be one of the most expensive utilities in most plants. Likewise, some may not even recommend using this technology to transmit energy from one machine to another due to its inefficiency.

While a lot of industrial plants already shifted to more advanced equipment, it does not mean the use of traditional compressed air won’t become obsolete soon.

Different uses of compressed air

Most people may not know this, but the use of compressed air is prevalent. For starters, compressed air is used in two major ways — as part of a process (active air) and as energy (energy air).

The former refers to an important part of a specific process. To enhance air quality, oil-free compressors are used to treat the air. Active air is commonly used in different industries such as semiconductor and electronics, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and for medical purposes among a few.

The latter, on the other hand, is commonly used to transmit and store energy to make machines and equipment work. There are other applications wherein compressed air is used. One example is in roller coasters.

Compressed air provides power to its passenger restraint system, including the brakes and gates. This is to ensure the safety of the passengers while they are twisting and turning along the roller coaster ride.

Likewise, compressed air is also used in other rides as part of their launch systems as well as in power washers and other cleaning equipment. Aside from that, compressed air is also used not only to put air into vehicle tires but also to manufacture it.

Compressed air is also important in a safety system of vehicles as it is responsible for ensuring the efficiency of its air brake and suspension systems and deploys the airbag in case of accidents.

Maximizing the air compression system

As mentioned, the use of compressed air may already be outdated for some industries; that is why they have shifted to more advanced equipment. However, it can actually be maximized for more energy efficiency. Here are some suggestions to ensure the system’s efficiency.

1. Take time to be more aware of using compressed air.

Some people may be taken aback when they find out how much it costs them to operate the air compressor system. At the same time, they may find it disappointing how inefficient it can be when they use it. That is why education and training are keys to understand this system further and maximize its use.

2. Ensure to monitor the system.

It is important to monitor your air compressor system so you can have an idea of its estimated costs and to manage it better. Among key parameters that need to be monitored include power, pressure, flow, and dew point within a specific amount of time.

3. Replace or repair equipment to promote efficiency.

Using damaged equipment can add up to expenses and also cause potential accidents. That is why it is important to have regular maintenance to ensure that the equipment is in good and efficient working condition.

We may not realize it, but there are many instances wherein we encounter machinery and equipment that uses compressed air. This runs the equipment, offer safety, and make our lives more convenient.
